A couple of years ago when i first left home, I was lonely so decided I needed a kitten. I went to the SPCA, but having spent years volunteering at SPCAs, I just couldn’t bring myself to leave with a kitten when there were so many adult cats that no one wanted!

I sat in one room with a long-haired calico cat who instantly was all over me, face bumping, meowing, purring. She’d just weaned kittens and was thin and drab-looking. When I told the cattery manager I wanted her, she told me that she had cancer on her nose. It looked okay to me, though, so I figured I could give her a few good years with me and took her anyway.
Soon after, I took her to the vet for vaccinations and for a rather ototoxic-looking head lean. Sure enough, she had a ruptured ear drum, but more importantly, no cancer! She simply had a tri-coloured nose to go with her tri-coloured coat. I was excited to learn i might have a bit longer with her than I’d ever dared hope up to that point!

With a few weeks of care, she blossomed and looked far from that drab thin cat I took a gamble on! Today, she’s my very precious girl named Ember. When I was single, she kept me company, and we’re very attached to one another! The first time I took her to a cattery, she thought she was in the SPCA again, I think, because when I came back for her, she recognized my voice and greeted me so frantically that it made me cry!
She’s terrible with other cats, and she has a few issues with biting, but I’ve found ways to avoid triggers that make her bite. She’s wonderfully loving – I’m sure she knows she’s a rescue – and has given me several good hits in the face while face-bumping me enthusiastically over and over.

She’s my one-in-a-million special cat, and I’m grateful for her every day.
